The History and Uses of Kraft Cardboard

What is Kraft Cardboard?
Kraft cardboard and paper is a type of material used in packaging because it is much stronger than traditional paper. This is due to the type of pulping process under which it is created.

Kraft makers use softwood with long fibres that add strength to the final product. When pulping wood chips under the kraft process, manufacturers use a hot mixture of water, sodium hydroxide (NaOH), and sodium sulphide (Na2S).

You will recognise the results as they are darker than regular paper, coming out brown rather than white. However it is possible to bleach kraft paper to make it white.

The name ‘kraft’ comes from the German word for ‘strength’, which is a reference to the ability of this paper to carry more weight than normal paper products.

History of Kraft Paper
A process similar to the kraft process was already in place in the UK during the early part of the 19th century, but it wasn’t until 1879 that German chemist Carl F Dahl invented the system that we know today. It grew in popularity in the 20th century, with technological advancements making it the leading form of paper and cardboard manufacture.

Known for its strength, in recent years it has also been feted for its recyclability. As we face a climate crisis and gain greater understanding over our use and the scarcity of the planet’s valuable resources, we are always looking for new ways to reuse items and being able to recycle our takeaway food packaging is exactly the sort of habit we should be embracing.

Uses of Kraft Cardboard
There are so many different items of food packaging created from kraft cardboard. They are robust and durable enough to keep your food intact and protected, but also lightweight and, importantly, widely recyclable.

From food cones for carrying churros, chips and anything else you like, to extra large carry packs that contain your whole team’s lunch, there is a kraft food packaging option that will work perfectly for you.

Some of the most common uses include burger boxes that hold your delicious snack in place so that you can enjoy the majestic first bite with the eyes before you tuck in with a hearty bite. You can also get hold of kraft cardboard pizza boxes to transport a piping hot margherita to your favourite eating place.
